Update on Post-Election America

Today at school, I could physically feel the division that the election had caused. I live in a majority Republican county, so there are plenty of Trump supporters at my school. There was even a kid who brought an American flag and was standing on a lunch table at snack, waving it around screaming "USA! USA!". All day, it has been a nightmare just thinking about Donald Trump being the next president. Students are scared, and not just liberals or Democrats, but everyone. Kids with undocumented parents, siblings, or family members now worry that someone will take their loved ones away.

And to clarify, I am fucking tired of people saying that undocumented immigrants are "lazy who live off of welfare", but if you'd take the time to you know, DO RESEARCH, you would find that they are a massive portion of our agricultural work force, economy, etc. They also pay over $12,000,000,000 (yes, that's $12 billion) in state and local taxes. To add onto that, undocumented immigrants can't even receive welfare. The only benefits they receive is basic healthcare and a free K-12 education for their children.

So we have to ask ourselves, are we going to be a country that is so uncomfortable with the thought of people coming to the United States for a better life, that they'd literally risk everything just to get here. Or are we going to be a nation that has open arms to those who want to come here to simply escape the hell that they're coming from, so that they can have a chance to reach their dreams?

You decide.

So much truth to this. I work on a very popular software that deals with Affordable Housing. You cannot get affordable housing for HUD/USDA funding without either a Social Security Number, Alien Registration Number or a USDA number. It's against Government rules. HUD will not pay for rent for someone who does not have an SSN number. There are even rules to pay back rent if a person(s) lie about their income and make more than they do in order to get lower rent.

Tax credit is a different story though, you don't need a SSN to receive Tax Credit as a company/person who run's rentals. There are income limits though to receive this Tax Credit. That being said the Tax Credit is for those that own the properties, not the renters and they see no benefits for it. There are over 104 different types of tax credits. Each state has at least 2 different kinds and some counties within that state have their own in metropolitan areas.

Income Limits: https://www.huduser.gov/portal/datasets/il/il2016/select_Geography.odn

I have also lived in Kentucky where outside of the major cities all there is really only farm work and small factories scattered here and there. I have never seen any of Trump's main demographic (White Males) in the fields working. I instead have only seen those that might be here illegally or legally Hispanics working in the fields. Why? Because it's hard work with little pay. Farmers don't make much so they have to pay little to the help they get. With legal people screaming about wanting $15 minimum wage across the country(which is no way needed, Kentucky is cheap living) why would they want to work for $5 an hour?

There are a lot of things that need fixed and it is going to be an uphill battle and not as easy as some people think it will be in order for Trump to have a successful presidency. Obama has had some hard battles during his presidency. Some have worked out some have not worked out as they were intended to because people just hated it because of the divide we have in this country.

Agreed. Can we just put this topic to rest? No one here is right or wrong.

The election is what it is and whether you like it or not Donald J. Trump is our next president.

Follow up note: half (exaggerating, don't call me out on it) the population follows the media blindly "trump is this, trump is that" well I hate to break the news to all of you, he's not half the shit they say he is and Hillary is no better. Funny how things go missing when she's around, millions of dollars, 33 thousand emails, and one more thing... oh yeah, my respect for people like her.

I said this same thing. I don't like it but I respect my country's democracy.

Hopefully we have been respectful in this entire thread(at least I think we have) so this is a positive.

And for all of you who just want complain look at the positive. Yes he said some hateful, bigoted, racist things. We all know it. But over half the country(following the popular vote here) voted against that. 50 years ago I don't think it would have been as close as it is. This is progress in a way. Lets be optimistic.

The only reason, as a Canadian, that I would prefer that Trump wasn't the President is simply because one of the first things he wants to do is look at the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) which could be damaging to the Canadian economy, as if it isn't hurting enough already.

That and the fact that Canada doesn't really support a Republican party. All of our political parties are left wing, some more central then others, obviously.

I am actually for this. Sorry. But it has been shown that trade from Canada and Mexico to the US has increased while trade leaving the US has declined a lot. What this means is we are importing more goods for us to consume than us exporting. If we are not exporting goods then we are not manufacturing goods, if we are not manufacturing goods then we are not gaining/keeping jobs.

I am fully against Trump for who he is as a person and the way he has depicted himself, but I do like some of the ideas he has planned to complete within his first 100 days. We have another pacific something or other trade agreement which also hurts us as a country.

I have personally seen the results of our manufacturing jobs leaving the country. My home town was thriving 30K population town. I can think of 3 major factories(Television plant, Chevy/GMC plant, and a glass factory) not including the smaller factories and companies that helped to support those. Lots of general labor jobs making decent money at the time. After Nafta I told people the jobs would leave and they didn't believe me or thought it would be a good thing to try and build up Mexico's economy and it would help ours. One by One 2 of the 3 major factories left. Glass factory is gone because it was cheaper to make these products elsewhere, TV factory left because it was cheaper to make them elsewhere. GM Plant stayed but no one was retiring/leaving the company(and still do not) because it is all there was left. My home town then fell fast. Now it still has 30K people, but no jobs, no jobs means people had to find more ways to support their families. Crime increased and now it is not safe to live there any longer.

So I really disagree with Nafta and do wish it gone. I hate that it would hurt other countries, but we also need to look to help ourselves first before we help others.Which is partially why Trump won, the middle class feels like it is getting ignored by the status quo and wanted to show politicians that we need change.

NAFTA and the TPP are an absolute burden on the United States. @Jyncs said it perfectly. These free trade agreements only boost the economies of other countries, and bring down the number and quality of manufacturing jobs in the United States.

As you know, I am a strong liberal, but Trump is playing this card right. I'm actually curious to see if he can rearrange these trade agreements to put American jobs before globalization.  :steve:

I am hoping people will stop calling others homophobic for being christians.

I am not a big donald trump fan, but I know that Hilary is much worse. I would like to give him a chance.

Here are some pros about him.

*Wants to finish the keystone pipeline

*redirect money from climate change research to energy and gas

*will not accept the presidential salary

*is a very successful businessman, which might be just what we need for this country.

*Helping Law enforcement become respected and fixed

*Dissolve obamacare (has put many of my close friend's practices out of business)

Another thing is, I disagree with people calling him racist because of his stance on immigration. Most of these people are white anyway. Point is, this is not the end of the world. This is the best case scenario.

As for his remarks about women, He has publicly apollogized to the public as well as his family. Now lets take a look at those videos of the people accusing Bill clinton of rape while hilary laughs at them. Trump may not be a perfect person, but he is no excuse for people to be even worse to eachother because of it. Have you guys seen the videos of that woman tossing her kid out because he voted for trump in a fake election at school?

Point is, stop yelling about racism and how the world is going to end.... its not.

Ps: Me and my whole family are Mexican.

Excuse all my gramatical errors, did not have much time to write this.

On a more depressing note, the #Dpa4NextObama can't even change to #Dpa4NextTrump cuz that makes it sound negative ):
