I shut down Minetest and the TTT servers.
What now? What server should I host now?

Here's the thing - I don't want to start a server that I don't play on unless I have someone trustworthy playing daily and being my representative on that server.

What I'd be tempted to host:
Unturned (need someone to play daily)
GMod either Sandbox (does anyone still play sandbox?) or perhaps Prophunt?
7 Days To Die (do we have any demand for it?

Do suggest others and do say what you think

Why host a game that you can't make profit from? Not many, and i mean not many want to donate to a server into which the get nothing back from via Ark. You're better off trying out different minecraft modpacks and minigames then anything else.

Hosting a GMod server at this point is like buying a really old car. Sure, it could be a good car and all, but it's not going to last as long as something newer. It's had its run; and this is coming from someone who spent several hundred hours on the SFT TTT server. Unturned isn't a completely horrible choice, but unless it's had major changes lately, it gets boring fast. Grief prevention plugins aren't the best and if you wanted to allow PvP/griefing/raiding, the game is pretty desyncy (ex. cars running you over when on your end they're nowhere near you). 7 days to die I feel is in the same boat as GMod. The game was fairly popular when it came out, but they've made weird changes and the game just doesn't seem to have the hype behind it anymore.

If you think about it as if we're one of those little fish things that cling on to sharks; us clinging on to GMod, Unturned or 7DtD is like clinging to a dead shark at this point. Sure, what's left might do some good here and there, but the games are only really popular to a very select amount of people. Even while our TTT server was at it's peak, nobody really donated.

I feel as though any server that you wanna make decent profit from will require practically a new community forming. Even if we come out with the best Arma 3 server ever tomorrow, ~90% of SFT doesn't own it and probably never will. We'd have to attract a whole new crowd. Every new server we come out with we try to shove it into our little community bubble and force the existing players to play it, then we all get upset when the server is empty 24/7 when a huge portion of the community didn't even know the game existed. While Arma is just an example, the biggest communities and servers on Arma started with Arma. They've been with the game since Arma 2 and they'll probably be with the game till hell freezes over - and they're able to do that because their community is almost entirely composed of people who come home every day and play Arma for 6 hours straight, just like we are with minecraft. Difference is, Mojang's EULA has pretty much killed the ability to survive and thrive in terms of donations. The game won't die tomorrow, but in my opinion, it's already in a decline.

You know you can try a fresh GMod, Unturned, or 7D2D server but we all know what the end result is going to be... Server starts off strong and over a course of a week or two dies off. Like @IPwnCreeps said we're beating a dead horse with trying to make the same servers repeatedly. The only way any server besides Minecraft will be popular is if we advertise outside our current Minecraft community bubble.

If you did get a 7 days to die this would be a helpful mod: compo-pack + valmod expansion

In my honest opinion, we should not focus on other servers right now and focus on advertising or paying professional plugin devs outside of SFT to come in and make custom plugins. Maybe try to contact some Youtubers, like PaintballKitty or Pabbie, to record a video or at least drop by our server and say hi?

More servers means we have a more open market for new players to see us. Some do not play on Minecraft servers, some don't play on ARK servers, et cetera. But some are dedicated players to whatever game(s) they play (like my love to TF2).
We are, as mentioned in the quote, at a risk of losing the player base from our current servers and a low median between servers; or basically wastes money on hosting a dead, empty, abandoned server.

We could do a minigames server with some games like hunger games snake spleef etc. I know of some good plug-ins and I bet that if we got it going some other people might too. I would definitely play it, and help build it, and I bet some others would too!

we can attract helpful, needed newer players such as professional developers, possibly even new youtubers. Or we may get people who know how to run other servers and can help us from there after we have our current ones fixed and ready. Once we get a solid playerbase here with enough players, who can help attract more attention to sft + help with other servers when the time comes sft will be swinging harder than ever. But it seems Towelie only ever wants to leave mc for other servers. Not trying to be rude, but why leave something that's working, repeatedly for something that's only shown to not work with the people we currently have.

Here, let me break this down for you real quick:

The average cost for a plugin to be developed is between $5-$100+, this varies based on complexity.

To get any "professional developer", most won't work for you under $70-80k which is the starting salary for an entry-level software engineer. So, the best SFT will get are people who are programming for their first time or those who are doing it on their own free time (pro-bono). I don't see Towelie shelling out enough donation money to pay off a full time developer, let alone a "professional developer."

As for the YouTubers, we've been there and done that. We had PaintballKitty and Pabbie but they didn't last long or lost interest in Minecraft. We paid Bashurverse, who made one video, and then completely forgot about us. So, I doubt wasting money on YouTubers is actually worth it.

That being said, we could branch out to a new game, and devote more time to building a community around that. Or continue on with Minecraft servers for the rest of SFT's existence.

How about we just focus on what we have, scrap the idea of opening any future servers until something fresh comes out. Everything that's been suggested from what I've scimmmed over (on phone, nor reading everything) has been tried and dies off wasting our time and money.

Also, a new modpack, past 1.7.10 Mc runs into the same problems pix does: plugins.

I know some people will probably say this is stupid but how about a HL2 RP server it would allow our members to be creative along with put themself in the mindset of another person also due to me owning a hl2 rp server in the past ( Decently Full almost every day) I could tell you some of the commands needed to set up certain spots ex: shops buyable doors etc

I personally would like to see a vanilla server.

I know I know you did get minetest but minetest was nothing like a vanilla server.

I would love to see the server run with like community events like killing the wither or ender drag together and it been reset once in a while.

I personally miss minecraft where its just the raw basic of minecraft where you can build stuff but you build and its like you build it raw

idk if anyone else agrees with me but I  really miss vanilla.
