Tom Brady to Start in Regular Season
from MassLive Blog

At the beginning of Deflategate, Roger Goodell and the NFL fully believed they had Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in a stranglehold. And by Deflategate's merciful end, Goodell was merely clinging to the illusion that he had done everything correctly in his one-track mission to convict the star quarterback.

When Brady initially appealed Goodell's arbitration award, the league rushed to file the case in Manhattan so it wouldn't be moved to Minnesota and Judge David Doty, who ruled against the NFL in the Adrian Peterson case this past February. It likely took 10 minutes of questioning from Berman for Goodell to deeply regret this decision.

When Berman gave the NFL one final chance to present arguments Monday, attorney Daniel Nash passed â€" possibly because he was so relieved to avoid another humiliating Q&A with Berman, or possibly because of some misplaced confidence that the league held the upper-hand. Probably some combination of both.

When Goodell strode past reporters Monday at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan courthouse, he made sure to hold a smile the whole way. That's what he does. Roger Goodell looks the part. Every step he has taken in Deflategate has been with conviction. He has doubled down at every opportunity. He made every power move he could, until there were no more to make, until a federal judge finally got to say whether or not this process was carried out fairly and legally.

On some level, Goodell must have known this day could be coming, that all the backpedaling would eventually give way to a hard, resounding fall.
